Gottschee Academy teams braved the severe winter weather last weekend to travel to Buffalo where the Under 18 registered a 2-0 shutout of Empire Soccer Club. Despite a solid performance by Gottschee in the first half, it was scoreless until Danny Herrera’s direct kick from 35 yards found the upper corner to give Gottschee a 1-0 lead five minutes to half time. The 2nd half witnessed an exhibition in Gottschee ball – a style of soccer that places a high premium on ball movement and combination play. And 20 minutes into the half, Danny Herrera’s blast rebounded to Greg Davis who calmly put it away for 2-0 shutout.

U-16 Academy
Last Sunday, in a much-anticipated return encounter following Gottschee’s 3-0 shutout of the Red Bulls two weeks ago, the U16 continued their dominance over the Red Bulls with a convincing 2-0 win. In the 12th minute of the first half, Chris Johnson’s direct kick found the lower left corner to give Gottschee a 1-0 lead which they held into the break. In the 2nd half, Aaron Dennis’ direct kick somehow found a hole in the wall and into the back of the net to give Gottschee the insurance goal at the 64th minute mark. Understanding that they were away, Gottschee played a tactically brilliant game continuously frustrating the Red Bulls who found it impossible to breach Gottschee’s impregnable defense.
U-18 Academy
In the first half, Gottschee and the Red Bulls both traded goals in a tightly fought contest. The Red Bulls got on the board with a lovely goal in the 29th minute, but Gottschee’s Greg Davis got the equalizer minutes before the break. The 2nd half continued to be an end to end game but midway through the Red Bulls scored two quick goals in a three-minute span to break the game wide open. The Bulls then crowned an extremely solid 2nd half performance with two more goals for a convincing 5-1 win.

Under 9 Results
The Boys U-9A entered the CJSL indoor tournament this past weekend. BW Gottschee finished first in their grouping by defeating Islas Malvinas, SC Gjoa, and Asphalt Green, through some good teamwork and strong defense. In the semi-final round, BWG met Silver Lake and easily polished them off with a 7-1 victory. In the finals, BWG faced-off against SC Gjoa once again. BWG, through some good goaltending by Gjoa and poor end-to-end play by BWG, allowed for an exciting game. Leading 4-3 with 30 seconds left, Gottschee allowed Gjoa to tie the game at 4-4. With 15 seconds left and only enough time for a kick-off, BWG took a shot right from the kick-off which landed in Gjoa’s upper corner. Gottschee took
home the winner’s medal.
The U9B team displayed their improvement playing against the A-division teams at the CJSL indoor tournament this past weekend. The first game against Brooklyn Patriots was very close from start to finish but Gottschee fell short 2-0. Against Silverlake from Staten Island, the team played wonderfully losing 1-0 in the end. And Against Chelsea Piers the score was 1-1 until 4 minutes to the end when Gottschee, pressing for the win, opened up the game and lost 4-1. The team management is proud of the improvements that the team displayed.

Blau Weiss Gottschee Soccer - The Audacity of Youth
By Sham Samaroo
The CJSL’s Annual Indoor Tournament remains one constant source of immeasurable success, and that, thanks to its hardworking secretary, Emil Cohill.
And it was to the CJSL’s Under 8 tournament that I went on Valentine’s Day to get my soccer fix. Indeed, there is something inexplicably enthralling, delightfully heartwarming about six and seven-year-olds kicking around a soccer ball. I have the feeling that it’s the innocence, the carefree, egoless exuberance that has something to do with it. But I could be wrong. In any case, I must confess, I thoroughly enjoyed myself watching the promising talent on display.
If ever one wonders how is it that an amateur club like Blau Weiss Gottschee is able to compete with the “big moneyed” organizations, well the answer is quite simple – the club’s unerring commitment to its youth program where talent is identified, encouraged, and given the unfettered freedom to flourish. The last point cannot be emphasized enough. One of the pillars of Gottschee’s continued success over the years is the club’s philosophy at the younger levels. The importance of allowing kids to learn on their own, to self discover as it were. For example, when six-year-old Jack McGlynn sashayed through the opposition and sent a left-footed blast into the back of the net, can a coach really teach such spontaneous creativity at this age? I don’t think so. But he certainly can interfere with it!
The CJSL Indoor Tournament
Boys Under 8 Division A Results
Gottschee fielded two teams in this division. In the qualifying round, Gottschee “A” fell to Islas Malvinas 0-1 before recovering to shutout GJOA 3-0 and Brooklyn Italians 5-0, and earn a place in the semifinals. The Gottschee “B” team failed to make the playoffs despite a 1-0 win over SI Alliance, a tie with Super Soccer Stars, and a 1-3 loss to Brooklyn Patriots.
In the semifinals, Gottschee “A” routed the Brooklyn Patriots 5-3 but fell to Islas Malvinas by a similar score line to take home silver.
Boys Under 8 Division B Results
Here again Gottschee fielded two teams. The Gottschee “C” team defeated Kosmos/NY Greek Americans 1-0 in their opening game. I saw the action in the second game when Gottschee played to a dramatic 1-1 tie with Islas Malvinas. I watched this game in the company of Emil Cohill and we both marveled at the wonderful soccer on display by both teams. And these are six and seven-year–olds mind you! Gottschee “C” made light work of SC Gjoa SABA in their 3rd game defeating them 6-2 to earn a place in the semifinals. In the semis they met and defeated Cosmos 6-4 to await the finalist from the bottom of the draw.
In that draw, a very young Gottschee “D” team played to a 1-1 tie with Brooklyn Italians before falling to Cosmos 0-1 in the 3rd game. Earlier the team earned a walkover from Eleftheria Pancyprian in their opening game. It was enough to get them a berth in the semifinals where they ran out of steam and lost 0-9 to Islas Malvinas.
The finals saw a hard-fought but delightful battle between Gottschee “C” and Islas Malvinas with Gottschee falling at the final hurdle 2-3. The goal scorers for Gottschee were Jack McGlynn and Luke Osiecki.
